Bollywood

Indian cinema, with its diverse range of film industries, has profoundly impacted global cinema since the mid-20th century. Among these, Hindi cinema, commonly known as Bollywood, stands out as one of the largest and most influential film industries worldwide. Bollywood, which originated in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), gained significant prominence in the 1970s and now leads the world in terms of the number of films produced and released each year.

The history of Indian cinema began in 1896 when French brothers, the Lumière brothers (Auguste and Louis Lumière) introduced cinematography to Bombay. Dadasaheb Phalke, often called the father of Indian cinema, made a groundbreaking film titled "Raja Harishchandra" in 1913, which was India’s first full-length feature film. This was followed by "Alam Ara" in 1931, the first Indian film with a soundtrack. In recent years, Bollywood has gained increasing international recognition, driven by the growing Indian diaspora, which contributes about 12% of the industry’s revenue.

Bollywood is renowned for its vibrant music and dance sequences, which are central to its storytelling. The music in Bollywood films is carefully crafted, with lyrics and choreography that come together to create a unique style that influences both global music and dance trends. The dance itself is a fusion of various dance forms. Initially influenced by classical styles like Bharatanatyam and Kathak, as well as regional folk dances, it has incorporated Western styles such as jazz and hip-hop since the 1980s.  Bharatanatyam highlights the beauty of clear lines from the dancer's body, with detailed hand gestures and expressive facial storytelling. On the other hand, Kathak is known for its smooth movements, complex footwork, fast turns, and sudden pauses.

The dance performances often take place in grand settings, whether in majestic locations or vibrant natural environments, and are highlighted by elaborate costumes. These costumes, adorned with intricate gold or silver embroidery and complemented by fine jewelry, enhance the visual appeal of the dances. Bhangra, an energetic dance from Punjab known for its lively moves and rhythmic beats, and Garba, a colorful dance from Gujarat, are particularly prominent in Bollywood. Recently, Bollywood hip-hop has also gained popularity, reflecting the genre’s evolving nature. Overall, Bollywood films and dance are celebrated for their energetic and colorful performances. They blend traditional Indian elements with global influences, creating a unique and captivating cinematic experience that continues to enchant audiences both in India and around the world.

Still on the topic of Indian music and movies, let's talk about a specific company called T-Series. T-Series is an Indian music label and film production company that Gulshan Kumar started on July 11, 1983. T-Series joined YouTube on March 13, 2006, but it didn't start uploading videos until late 2010. On this channel, T-Series primarily features music videos and film trailers. By July 2013, it had surpassed 1 billion views, becoming the second Indian YouTube channel to achieve this milestone after Rajshri Productions. In January 2017, T-Series overtook PewDiePie to become the world's most-viewed YouTube channel, and as of November 2023, it has accumulated over 236 billion views. On September 10, 2018, the channel received a Custom Ruby Play Button for reaching 50 million subscribers. It also became the second channel ever to reach 70 million subscribers. On May 29, 2019, T-Series became the first channel to reach 100 million subscribers, and in December 2021, it was the first to reach 200 million subscribers. As of June 1, 2024, T-Series has 266 million subscribers, making it the second most-subscribed YouTube channel, behind MrBeast.

The growth of T-Series' YouTube channel has been largely attributed to India's expanding online population. A significant breakthrough in India's Internet growth came in September 2016 with the introduction of the 4G network Reliance Jio, which offered data at very low costs. Since then, India has emerged as the world's second-largest online population (behind China, where YouTube is blocked), with YouTube alone having over 225 million monthly Indian users. The high demand for YouTube content in India and the shortage of local content creators have significantly contributed to the rapid growth of T-Series.
