Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, is a bustling metropolis known for its commerce, historical sites, and delicious cuisine. But if you're looking for a break from the urban jungle, there are many beautiful natural escapes to be found just outside the city limits. Here are a few of our favorites:

 

  • Hutan Bambu Keputih

Kebun Bambu Keputih (Keputih Bamboo Forest) is a popular tourist destination located at Jalan Raya Marina Asri, Keputih, Sukolilo, Surabaya. Known for its beautiful scenery and tranquil atmosphere, the forest is made up of over 2,000 bamboo trees, which grow up to 20 meters tall,creating a dense canopy that blocks out the sun, making the forest a cool and refreshing place to visit.

Spanning over 40 hectares,  the area is divided into three sections: The Bamboo Forest, Taman Ruang Publik (Public Space Park), and Taman Harmoni (Harmony Park). In Taman Harmoni, your children can play on the playground equipment while you relax nearby.

 

  • Wonorejo Mangrove Forest

The Wonorejo Mangrove Forest is located on Jalan Raya Wonorejo No.1, Wonorejo, Rungkut District, Surabaya City. The Wonorejo Mangrove Forest is located on Jalan Raya Wonorejo No.1, Wonorejo, Rungkut District, Surabaya City. This ecotourism destination is a nature conservation area , protecting the eastern part of Surabaya from abrasion. Following the concept of ecotourism,  the forest combines recreational activities with educational opportunities.

The area is divided into two main sections: a wooden bridge that works as a jogging track and the mangrove forest itself. Visitors can freely access the jogging track, while exploring the mangrove forest requires crossing a river. This river exploration trip covers a distance of 5.4 kilometers and takes approximately 13-15 minutes. During this boat trip, visitors can enjoy the stunning scenery of the mangrove forest.

Apart from mangroves, there are also 83 species of exotic and rare birds such as the yellow bittern, purple heron, the Javan turtledove and the ivory punai. In this Wonorejo Mangrove Forest, visitors will see sea-type monkeys or long-tailed monkeys that live freely.

 

  • Taman Apsari

Apsari Park is one of the three Dutch heritage parks in Surabaya. During the Dutch reign era, Apsari Park was called Simpang Park or Kroesen Park due to its strategic location at an intersection. Located at Jalan Taman Apsari No.63, Embong Kaliasin, in the Genteng sub-district of Surabaya, this 1.3-hectare park offers tranquility and various interesting facilities for the visitors.

Mount Bromo is located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, a mountainous highland ranging between 1,000 to 3,676m above sea level. From this spot the vista is magnificent. All you will hear is the click of cameras as visitors snap their camera’s hoping to capture the incredible scene of Mt Bromo in the foreground with Mt Semeru smoking in the distance and the sun shining brightly, quickly rising in the sky.

From Surabaya, now we're moving on to Madura Island. This small island, with many hidden gems in terms of beaches, sits directly across from Surabaya and can be easily accessed via the Suramadu Bridge or by ferry. Unspoiled coastlines fringed with white sand and calm waters create an idyllic escape, perfect for relaxation or adventure. Here are some of Madura's most captivating beaches:

  • Lombang Beach: This popular beach in Sumenep boasts a breathtaking view of turquoise waters and soft, white sand. Visitors can soak up the sun, take a refreshing dip, or even enjoy horseback riding adventures offered by local vendors.
