First in the World, Indonesia Transforms Coal into EV Battery Components

Indonesia continues to develop downstream processing in the mining sector, not only for nickel, bauxite, and copper but also targeting coal. One such initiative involves transforming coal into components for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Key Point
- PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is one of the first companies trying out a new project to turn coal into artificial graphite and anode sheets for lithium-ion batteries. This is said to be the first project of its kind in the world.
- "Anode sheets, also known as anode foils, are vital parts of batteries. They make up about 22 percent of the battery's composition and are readily available in the market," Arsal Ismail Quotes.

Arsal Ismail, the CEO of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), stated that developing anode sheets from coal is a crucial step in supporting the government's vision to develop an ecosystem for battery-based electric vehicles.
"Among all the available components, members of MIND ID have provided other components such as nickel, copper, aluminum, and so on for the cathode. Currently, PTBA is striving to contribute to the supply of anodes made from graphite material," he said during the CNBC Indonesia Mining Zone event on Thursday (July 25, 2024).
PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is one of the companies pioneering this development or pilot project to convert coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheets for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery raw materials. This conversion is claimed to be the first of its kind globally.
Arsal revealed that the pilot project to convert coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheets for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery raw materials is the result of collaboration between PTBA and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
According to him, this synergy is expected to support government policies that promote downstream processing and the advancement of the electric vehicle industry domestically.

Moreover, this project could also present opportunities in other industrial sectors. This is because Artificial Graphite is not limited to just being used in anodes for batteries.
"Artificial Graphite is a primary material for making anodes. Anode Sheets are electrodes where oxidation reactions occur (positive pole), one of the critical components of Li-ion batteries," he explained.
"Anode Sheets, what are they? Anode Sheets, or anode foils, are one of the important components inside the battery. Their content in the battery totals up to 22 percent. Naturally, these battery components are widely available in the market," he added.
