Banana fritters were originally introduced by the Portuguese, who enjoyed bananas as a breakfast food. This practice made its way to Southeast Asia during the Portuguese colonization of Indonesia. They coated peeled bananas in flour batter and fried them, a culinary tradition that quickly gained popularity among the Indonesian people and continues to be cherished today.

Key point

  • Bananas are beneficial for health as they are rich in essential vitamins, calories, potassium, and carbohydrates.

As one of the largest tropical countries globally, Indonesia is also a major exporter of bananas, known for its diverse variants influenced by different regions and provinces. Each province, with its unique geographical features and soil types, contributes to the variety and distinct flavors of bananas grown there. One of Indonesia's most renowned banana dishes is Pisang Coklat (commonly abbreviated as Piscok). Despite its popularity among students, Piscok is a traditional snack enjoyed across all social classes and age groups, from children to adults.

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 spring roll wrappers
  • 8-10 bananas, sliced
  • Chocolate spread
  • Sufficient water
  • Adequate cooking oil

Instruction:

  1. Halve the banana.
  2. Lay one banana slice on a spring roll wrapper, then spread chocolate jam over it.
  3. Moisten the wrapper's edges with water, fold it from right to left to completely encase the banana and chocolate jam, and press the ends of the wrapper together.
  4. Heat cooking oil to the proper temperature and fry the wrapped mixture over low heat.
  5. Fry until golden brown, then it's ready to serve.
