Kalamata Fort, initially named Santa Lucia, stands as a historic fortress constructed by the Portuguese in 1540 on the island of Ternate. Located in the Kayu Merah sub-district of South Ternate City, it earned the moniker "Red Wood Fort" due to its distinctive red wood construction. The fort's name, Kalamata, is derived from Pengeran Kalamata, the younger brother of Sultan Madarsyah of Ternate. Over time, Kalamata Fort evolved into a symbol of resilience and strategic importance, reflecting the complex colonial history of the region and serving as a reminder of the enduring legacies of past rulers.
