One trainset of the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) or an autonomous tram, which will be operated in the new capital city of Nusantara (IKN), arrived in Balikpapan on July 26, 2024. This trainset is the Norinco Autonomous Tram (CRRC Zhuzhou).
The autonomous tram will undergo internal trials, followed by a trial run with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on August 5, 2024. A showcase or performance demonstration is planned to take place from October to December 2024.

The autonomous tram or ART represents a leap in the use of new technology in Indonesia's transportation sector, being a rail-less train. The autonomous tram is operated using batteries, guided by road markings and magnets, making it effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.
The initial operation of the autonomous tram in IKN will serve as a feeder vehicle for participants of the Independence Day ceremony. This mode of transportation will operate along Jalan Sumbu Kebangsaan Barat and Jalan Sumbu Kebangsaan Timur IKN, with a cruising speed of 40 km/h.
"Hopefully, this autonomous tram can become one of the smart transportation icons in the IKN area. It is also hoped that the autonomous tram can be applied in other cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Makassar, and Medan," said Budi Karya.
One trainset of the autonomous tram that will operate in IKN consists of three cars with a maximum capacity of 302 passengers. The autonomous tram will run clockwise, with a headway of around 5 minutes.
"The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) will soon build stops to support the operation of the autonomous tram. These stops will not only serve as places to pick up and drop off passengers but will also function as charging stations," said Budi Karya.
